Let your fingers do the walking
Labyrinths are meditation tools that have been used for centuries by many societies and cultures. Unlike a maze, there is only one way into the center and one way out. The path of the labyrinth often symbolizes a journey. Some are large enough to physically walk and some are not. Even a finger labyrinth can help us find calm and relaxation. My students have been drawing and decorating our own finger labyrinths to help us with transitions, to focus before a test or to find a bit of peace during our busy school day. Check out this video to help you create your own labyrinth and then “walk it.”
Start by taking a few deep breaths to invite relaxation and focus. To create a sacred state, you may enjoy reading a prayer, poem or meditation before beginning your “walk.” Choose either your dominant or non-dominant index finger or even use a pencil to mindfully walk the labyrinth. Slowly and intentionally trace the path with your finger. Just as you might walk a labyrinth, you can trace at your own speed. Once you reach the center, take time to relax and focus on your breathing. When you’re ready, retrace your way out of the labyrinth. Take your time. Notice how smooth the paper feels under your fingertip. Notice the quality of your breath. Notice the quality of your thoughts. Repeat whenever you want to center your body and still your mind.
