See things from a new angle
A regular yoga and mindfulness practice encourages us to change perspective. WIth consistency and diligence, your mind becomes focused and there is no room for distraction or negativity. Yoga and meditation invite you to see the world from a positive lens and open yourself up to beauty all around you and in everyone and everything. SMOW students spent time last week outside practicing yoga, including inversions, which literally flip your perspective upside down. Whenever your head is below your heart, it is considered an inversion. Luckily though, we don’t need to flip completely upside down to experience their benefits. Even downward dog or a gentle forward fold are considered inversions. In addition to improving circulation and calming the nervous system, these poses change your perspective and cultivate joy, energy and confidence. Yoga helps you realize that some of your beliefs may be limiting, and it can enable you to shift gears in any area that may need it. “Yoga does not just change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees,” says B.K.S. Iyengar, an Indian yoga teacher instrumental in introducing yoga to the Western world. Yoga asks you to notice your patterns and consider taking actions in a new way. When you practice yoga and meditation, your mind becomes clear and allows you to see with fresh eyes.
SMOW students also spent some time looking at optical illusions. We realized that people see things differently and that we can train ourselves to shift perspective and be open to change. Each pose, each inversion, each foot step, each breath, is an opportunity to begin again and see things from a different perspective.
